Sanmaek unfolds as a performance in which three saxophones gradually lose their separateness. Sound gathers, stretches and folds into itself, less as music than as a material condition occupying bodies and space. What is heard seems to have neither origin nor destination, but persists as vibration, density and duration. Somewhere between landscape and organism, Sanmaek allows sound to become strangely autonomous—as though listening could disclose a world already there, adjacent to ours, yet indifferent to being understood.
Composition: Lee Sunjae
Alto Saxophone: Hong Junpyo, Kim Sangbeom, Lee Sunjae
Sanmaek is a Seoul-based trio formed in 2026 by alto saxophonists Lee Sunjae, Hong Junpyo and Kim Sangbeom. Having played together in different constellations for several years, the three musicians come from backgrounds spanning composition, improvisation, classical music and experimental practices. Sanmaek centres on original compositions by Lee, exploring how three distinct instrumental voices can merge into a single, shifting body of sound.
