From fresh bananas to black and greasy crude oil, a major portion of our life depends on marine transportation. And yet, the process remains invisible to us. The ocean is a world blocked from our view. The ocean accessible to ordinary people is the ocean we swim in—the ocean of leisure time and consumption. Those who take the ocean more seriously practice scuba-diving and try to reach deeper water, but the gate to the ocean world remains beyond reach no matter how deep one dives. The port is always the most important site of marine transportation and yet, it is blocked off from the public because it is designated as a security zone. Thus, what happens inside a port will never be known to us. In this sense, the ocean of marine transportation is a parallel universe; we know it exists, but we can never reach it. Pier 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of Incheon Port and Pier 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of Busan Port, the Newport and its surrounding waters are examples of such a parallel universe. Based on materials gathered while peeking into the site of marine transportation, this work unfolds a story about the ocean we are unaware of.
